PARENT GUIDE

What should you check when planning overseas education for your child?

A university name alone is not enough to make the right choice. Consider the subject, annual costs, deadlines, visa preparation and the life the student wants.

First, talk about the student, then the country

Discuss the student's interests, strongest subjects, preferred living environment and career goals openly. A popular country cannot make up for the wrong subject choice.

What to clarify in your first consultation

  • The student's subject or field of interest
  • Language level and need for preparation
  • The family's sustainable annual budget
  • Intended intake and preparation time
  • Career and long term life expectation

Tuition is not the same as the total budget

A course may have low tuition, but housing and living costs can raise the total. Budget separately for tuition, living costs, insurance, transport, applications and your initial move.

About Scholarship

Scholarship applications may have different requirements and deadlines from admissions. Do not include an unconfirmed scholarship as guaranteed funding.

How do I check a school and course?

  • Check the official status of the institution and the campus.
  • Check the course's teaching language and the qualification it awards.
  • For professions requiring a licence, check qualification recognition before choosing a course.
  • Read payment and refund terms in the school's own documents.
  • If ‘partner school’ is claimed, ask for evidence.

Application, admission and visa planned in one calendar

The process continues after the application. Offer conditions, deposits, housing, visa documents and travel preparations depend on one another. Starting late can leave too little time for a visa or housing, even if a course still has places.

Will my child be on their own there?

This is the second question parents ask most. The points below should be settled in writing before departure.

AccommodationHall of residence, student flat or host family: the contract, the deposit and the exit terms must be in writing before departure. No payment is made for a booking without a contract.
Health insuranceIn most countries it is a precondition for the residence permit. Cover, excess and validity period are stated explicitly in the policy; travel insurance does not replace student health cover.
Emergency contactThe school's student support office, the Turkish consulate in that country and the country's emergency number are provided in writing before departure.
Students under 18Many countries require a legal guardian and parental consent. This condition varies by country and school and is confirmed with the relevant authority before applying.
Where the money goesTuition is paid directly into the school's official payment channel. If a consultancy asks for tuition to be paid into its own account, ask for the reason in writing.

No admission or visa guarantee is given. The admission decision is made by the school and the visa decision by the relevant authority. If a consultancy promises a guarantee, ask for it in writing.

Questions to ask your consultancy

Which services do you provide yourselves?

Ask for a written service scope covering programme research, applications, document checks, visa coordination and pre-departure support.

Who do we pay?

Keep consultancy fees, tuition, official fees and third-party payments separate. Check that tuition payments go through the school's official payment channel.

Do you guarantee admission or a visa?

University and visa decisions cannot be guaranteed. A good adviser explains risks and uncertainty from the start.

Why is the recommended country suitable?

An answer is not useful unless it relates to the student's subject, budget, language skills, timetable and career goals.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about this page

Who is paid, and when?

Tuition is paid directly into the school's official payment channel. The consultancy fee is separate and is shared in writing before work begins. If a consultancy asks for tuition in its own account, ask for the reason in writing.

My child is under 18 — are there extra conditions?

Many countries require a legal guardian and parental consent, and some schools require a specific accommodation arrangement for under-18s. This varies by country and school and is confirmed with the authority before applying.

What does the health insurance cover?

In most countries insurance is a precondition for the residence permit. Cover, excess and validity are stated explicitly in the policy. Travel insurance does not replace student health cover.

What if my child changes their mind?

Cancellation and refund terms differ between school, accommodation and insurance contracts. Ask for them in writing before paying; refunds follow those documents.

Who do I contact in an emergency?

The school's student support office, the Turkish consulate in that country and the national emergency number are provided in writing before departure.
